Doorless Dungeon
If you recall, our reading, Once Again, the Doorknob, mentioned an essay by Bruno Latour called Where Are the Missing Masses? The Sociology of a Few Mundane Artifacts. This essay mentioned what a world would be like without doors, and was framed as a retort to the presumptions around interactivity Donald Norman's work brings up.
Narratively, this episode continues from where we left off. Igoe's Beholder is still in our party. Now, we must find an exit to a dungeon with no doors.
You'll have to find three people to join your party, who help you learn the layout and learn new skills (to make doors). However, once you free them, you'll release a vampire mason, who can build walls. They can't cross doors but they can destroy them.
Controls
-
These controls are the same as before:
- WASD + arrow keys → move back and forth, turn left and right.
- ENTER + SPACE → talks to a character, or use the currently selected item.
-
New controls and items:
-
M (or click MAP) → Reveal the map. Spaces reveal as you walk across them. The cartographer will reveal the whole map.
-
TAB (or number keys) → Switch between your two items. bombs 1 key and Wood 2 key.
-
Using BOMBS && WOOD → press enter to use either.
- BOMBS → They are to blow up walls that are weak. Take a little bit to go off. They hurt you if you are too close. They immobilize the vampire temporarily. They can turn a door back into wood.
- DOORS → You can't make doors until you learn from the carpenter. You are immobile while making doors. The vampire cannot pass through a door but they can destroy them. You'll need at least 1 door to complete the level.
-
P (or click PARTY) → View the members of your party (not really useful, but if you lose the cartrographer you "forget" the map, and if you lose the carpenter you "forget" how to make doors).
-
RESTART button → You shouldn't be able to get stuck such that you cannot complete the episode but there is a finite amount of material (bombs and wood) and you can in theory, trap yourself. This button is to avert that, though it should be equivalent to simply refreshing the page.
