01. Drawing in Glyphs / Fontra
Introduction
For this part of the class, we'll split into breakout rooms for Glyphs(Mac) and Fontra(Windows) people. We will rip off the metaphorical band-aid.
What you need to do
- For Glyphs → download (DO NOT BUY) Glyphs full, NOT MINI! (I don't have the license files yet, but you have a 30 day free trial, and we will have licenses by then).
- For Fontra → download the "Fontra Pak" for Windows (presumably, if you want to use it and you are on a mac, you are allowed). Fontra is free.
What We Will Cover
- The workflow of how the programs work
- The differences of how you work in these programs versus Illustrator
- Basic drawing with the pen tool.
- Sidebearings.
- Font info/exporting.
Homework
- For homework you will make (at least) 5 glyphs/characters, of your own choice, in any case.
- This is not a rule, but I would maybe choose a letters that compose a word.
- The characters must have curves of some kind made with the respective pen tool.
- The characters cannot be composed of only "geometric primitives" (ellipses, rectangles)
- Upload the .ttf/.otf file (either is fine for now)
- Upload a raster image of all the letters you created.
